Celebrating 60 Years of Wilderness Protection and the Murie Legacy

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Wilderness Act, a monumental piece of legislation that has profoundly shaped the way we protect and cherish our nation’s wild places. Signed into law on September 3, 1964, by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Wilderness Act established the National Wilderness Preservation System, initially protecting 54 wilderness areas across 13 states. Today, this system has grown to encompass over 800 wilderness areas, covering nearly 112 million acres across the United States.

Olaus and Mardy Murie were instrumental in the creation of this landmark legislation. The Murie’s lifelong dedication to conservation helped to secure the passage of the Wilderness Act. Their work ensured that future generations would have the opportunity to experience the unspoiled beauty of America’s most treasured natural landscapes.

“The Wilderness Act represents more than just legislation; it’s a testament to the power of individuals who are deeply committed to safeguarding our natural heritage,” says Josh Kleyman, Chief Advancement Officer, Development at Teton Science Schools. “Olaus and Mardy Murie exemplified this commitment, and their legacy continues to inspire our work at Teton Science Schools.”

The Murie Ranch, located in Grand Teton National Park, was the home and headquarters of Olaus and Mardy Murie. It became a central hub for the conservation movement, where leaders and advocates gathered to discuss and shape the future of wilderness preservation. The ranch has since been designated a National Historic Landmark District and is now a campus stewarded by Teton Science Schools on behalf of Grand Teton National Park, where the legacy of the Muries continues to educate and inspire future generations.

We are filled with excitement as we reflect on the significance of the Wilderness Act and celebrate its impact and the legacy of the Muries. The Murie Spirit of Conservation celebration kicks off the first weekend in October with more events to follow. These events will serve as a reminder of the critical role that the Wilderness Act plays in protecting our natural world and the ongoing importance of wilderness preservation.

The Murie Ranch Advisory Committee reflects on this milestone, stating, “As we celebrate this anniversary, we are reminded of the responsibility we have to uphold the values that Olaus and Mardy championed. Their dedication to preserving wilderness is a legacy that we must carry forward with the same passion and resolve.”
