Teton Junior Science School (Grades 1-6)


Teton Junior Science School is open for weekly enrollment to students entering grades 1 through 6 in the fall of 2008. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in weeklong sessions. The weekly charge includes: 1) high quality instruction from experienced environmental educators, 2) small class size of 12 students, 3) field trips throughout Jackson Hole, 4) the use of Teton Science Schools' museum facilities, laboratory and equipment and 5) transportation to and from Miller Park in downtown Jackson. For students entering grades 5 & 6 each week culminates with an overnight adventure that highlights the topic of the week.

 

For junior scientists entering grades 1 & 2
Sight, sound, touch, smell! Sensory exploration, hands-on experience, stories and plenty of activities are the hallmarks of the program for these curious learners. There will be a daily project or craft to help synthesize learning, journals, songs and an unending exploration of nature's wonders at a scale these young minds enjoy.

 

 

 

Microscopic Magicians
Do you ever wonder about the world beneath your feet? How do small things survive in such a great big world? We will search for insects, flowers, birds, and other small animals that are often missed through casual observation. Get your hand lenses ready to find out how these tiny life forms survive and discover the magical role they play in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

Summer Safari
Join us on a safari across Jackson Hole to learn about the grand animals that grace this beautiful landscape. Learn and practice tracking skills; use watercolors to paint a unique creation; sing songs and play games. Let creativity guide you as you explore the habits and habitats of the amazing animals of this area.

Avian Explorers
Discover Jackson Hole from a bird's eye view---hawks soaring above a field, dragonflies cruising for a mosquito dinner, butterflies searching for flowers. We will use binoculars to gaze closely at birds, chase insects with nets and let our imaginations soar while investigating what it means to be a critter with wings.

For junior scientists entering grades 3 & 4

Questions, questions, questions! There are so many questions to explore in nature. We've designed activities for this age group around hands-on exploration, hikes and a naturalist's journal to delve into questions about the world around them. We will use a variety of activities and teaching techniques to suit all types and levels of learners.

 

Teton Trackers
Have you ever found animal signs and wondered what left them behind? Come with us to investigate the wild world of Jackson Hole and gain a deeper understanding of our animal neighbors. Make plaster casts of tracks, identify scat, and learn how to look for other animal signs. We will use our naturalist skills to unravel the mysteries and tell our own stories of what is discovered.

Aquatic Adventurers
What types of animals and plants live under or near the water? What adaptations do they have to survive? Come with us to explore the wonders of water and discover a whole new world! We will collect critters, observe beaver dams and find tracks along the water's edge. Help us investigate the animals and plants that inhabit our streams, rivers and wetlands.

Art in the (National) Park
Grand Teton National Park is one of nature's masterpieces. Magnificent mountains, sweet-smelling sagebrush, majestic animals and a bounty of wildflowers make it an artist's dream. Tap into your creative side as we explore colors, shapes and textures and look for patterns in nature's garden. We will press flowers, examine rocks and trees, play with watercolors, and use natural materials to create original works of art.

For junior scientists entering grades 5&6
The emphasis is on having fun and meeting new friends through outdoor learning adventures. Working on leadership skills, participants accomplish daily challenges through team or individual efforts while focusing on a natural history theme in the Greater Yellowstone Geo-ecosystem. Each week culminates with an overnight adventure that highlights the topic of the week. The program ends at noon on Friday.


         

Trail Trekkers
Have you ever been out on the trail for an entire day? Come explore the valleys and vistas of Grand Teton National Park . Gain a new perspective of Jackson Hole when you hike to magnificent views of lakes, canyons and mountains. We will discuss the forces that created and continue to shape these vistas and learn everything we need to know to hike in the wilderness. The week will culminate with an overnight camping trip to celebrate our newly learned skills and knowledge.

Geology Rocks!
Envision being in the shadow of mountains created by earthquakes and carved by glaciers then travel north to sit atop one of the world's “hottest spots.” Curiosity is your ticket to adventure in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks where we will learn how powerful earthquakes, glaciers and volcanoes influenced the landscape. See, feel and smell earth explosions and gurgling geysers when we conclude the week with an overnight in Yellowstone National Park.

Super Stream Team
Pull on some rubber boots, hop in a raft and explore streams and rivers of Jackson Hole . Get ready to get your hands dirty and your feet wet as you investigate the critters that make their home in the water. Camp along a river and let the sound of flowing water soothe you to sleep on the last night of the course.

Paddle Power
Take a step back in time when this region was covered by ice! How did we get the landscape and lakes we see today? Travel across the region's lakes by canoe as you learn about the formation of Jackson Hole 's picturesque lakes and discover the unique plant and animal life that lives in and among them. We will end the week with an overnight camping experience.

Wolf Wisdom and Bear Essentials
Why do some people love bears and wolves while others fear them? We will discover the roles that these predators play in our ecosystem. Learn the differences between our canine and bear companions while looking for subtle clues that tell the story of the life of a large predator. We will end the week with an overnight camping trip to learn how to hike and camp safely in bear country.

Middle School Learning Adventures

 

The Art of Ecology
Explore the intersection between ecology and art this summer in Jackson Hole. During this week long program, students will take a closer look at the unique Jackson Hole ecosystem through outdoor exploration and artist workshops. Students will deepen their understanding of this spectacular landscape while observing shapes, colors and patterns in nature and transforming what they discover into drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. At the end of the week, students will host an art show displaying their work for friends and family.

Middle School Field Ecology
Join students from around the country for a 10-day, residential educational adventure in the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Geo-ecosystem. Explore diverse wildlife and the various landscapes of the region with Teton Science Schools' instructors. Week one focuses on field ecology skills and includes a student-designed research project, while the last four days celebrate newly acquired knowledge and friendships by connecting to both nature and human communities. There will be two sessions of Middle School Field Ecology in 2008, and both include a backcountry experience.

Grand Teton Scavenger Hunt
Imagine a weeklong scavenger hunt that will challenge you to master the use of a map, compass and Global Positioning System (GPS). Using these traditional and modern tools you will navigate through dense conifer forests and across clear glacial lakes in the pursuit of treasures large and small! You will learn about ecosystems while you are learning different ways to navigate and how to shoot a bearing on a compass while playing Frisbee golf. Students will learn how to set a waypoint on a GPS and use waypoints to find existing geocaches.

During this 7-day adventure you will camp, hike, canoe and explore your way through Jackson Hole, Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park . You will learn about wildlife behavior through observation and witness the magnificent footprint of glaciers shaping our landscape. The spectacular peaks of the Teton, gurgling geysers of Yellowstone and amazing wildlife of the Greater Yellowstone Geo-ecosystem await your discovery!

Introduction to Backpacking *New for 2008*
Whether you're new to backpacking or interested in improving your skills, this experience will fuel your sense of adventure. This course is designed for middle school students who want to become familiar with the ecology of Grand Teton National Park while learning how to backpack. Students will explore the basics of backpacking including; how to use a stove and cook in the wilderness, set up a tent, pack a backpack, use a map and compass, and how to backpack safely. Students will spend the first two nights on our Jackson Campus gaining the skills necessary to spend the following two nights in the backcountry.

High School Learning Adventures

 

High School Field Ecology
Since 1967, High School Field Ecology has been Teton Science Schools’ flagship summer program for students interested in ecology and applied field research. Those interested in applying scientific inquiry to the Greater Yellowstone Geo-ecosystem are rewarded with immersion in the natural sciences in one of the most beautiful and most ecologically complex places in North America. In-depth observation during field data collection, while under the guidance of educator scientists, helps sharpen the critical and analytical skills an ecologist needs. This course includes a backpacking trip in the Tetons as well as an independent research project, where new skills are put to use addressing a current conservation issue.  Whether you hail from Wyoming, Georgia or Germany, this four-week course is designed to bring out your best in one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. Tuition includes room, board and instruction. High school credit available.

Field Natural History
Attracting students from across the country, this 18-day program draws upon local artists and writers as well as Teton Science Schools’ qualified instructors to strengthen a sense of place for the remarkable western Wyoming landscape.  Discover and develop your skills as a field naturalist in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks while tracing the footsteps of Olaus Murie, Aldo Leopold and John Muir.  Explore this complex landscape through your art and writing.  Whether you canoe at the base of the Tetons, sketch Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon or deepen your understanding of the natural world through introspective journaling, you will discover new and exciting aspects of the natural world through art, writing and discovery-based science. Tuition includes room, board and instruction. High school credit available.

Spanish Culture and Language

Journeys School and the Latino Resource Center are joining forces to offer a Spanish immersion summer camp! The camp will provide the opportunity for spanish immersion through a variety of activities, including focused language exploration, the arts and plenty of outdoor time.

Service Works

Mighty Stewards
Are you ready to become a Mighty Steward? The Mighty Stewards will help build healthy communities in Jackson by getting their hands and feet wet and dirty. With the help of your “Mighty Steward” friends, collect and eliminate exotic plants, and explore the benefits of wildlife friendly fence from an elk’s perspective. Learn to be a responsible caretaker of Jackson’s natural world by participating in games, music and hands-on service projects. Celebrate the success of the week with your parents and friends on the last day. Do you want to get out of your house this summer and provide service to your community? Then become a Mighty Steward!

Wild Work
Join the Wild Work team to improve the communities of Jackson Hole while getting dirty, wet, and physical. With the help of your friends, collect plants submersed in water, improve wildlife friendly fencing with hand tools, and eliminate exotic plants with relay races! Participate in hands-on service-learning projects to learn how to become a responsible caretaker of Jackson Hole’s natural and social communities. The successes of the week will be celebrated with peers and parents on the final day. Do you want to be outdoors this summer and provide service to your community? Then join in the Wild Work.

Play Team

Are you ready for Jackson’s newest sport? Play Team is an innovative way to get your children engaged in creative play surrounded by a natural outdoor setting. Players will be given natural objects and boundaries, two “referees” will oversee the boundaries and safety, while providing ideas to get your child’s imagination rolling. Fly Fishing in the Tetons
Learn the basics of fly fishing including how to set up rods, reels, line, leader and tie knots. Students will learn how to cast a fly rod as well as identify local species of fish and insects. Aquatic habitats will be investigated to find the best places to catch fish. Students will learn which flies can be used to imitate a trout’s food through the study of entomology. Other topics will include stream etiquette, fishing safety and ethics.

Registration

All applications will be processed in the order they are received and must be accompanied by full payment with credit card or check. We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. You will be sent an acceptance packet to confirm your child’s enrollment.  Applications must include age, gender and grade in fall of 2008. Please register no more than two children per application. Enrollment is limited. Accepted students grant the Teton Science Schools permission for reasonable and proper use of any photograph of or written statement made by the student during any Teton Science Schools' program.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

If you cancel, a refund will be issued up to 30 days prior to the start date, less a $25.00 administrative fee per program. If less than 30 days, refunds will not be issued. Although we make every effort to adhere to our program schedule, extenuating circumstances may cause Teton Science Schools to cancel a program, in which case a full refund will be issued.
